Another recent order called for a monkey sweater with a Scottish Thistle. Truthfully I didn’t know what a thistle was until I googled it. It’s a prickly looking flowering plant, which I have definitely seen before. This is when my fantasy of being a botanist comes to mind and I wish I knew the names of a 1000 plants!

When I was thinking about the design, I thought about doing something asymmetrical because it’s a plant but since it wasn’t an ordinary thistle, but the emblem of Scotland,  I decided to design a symmetrical graphic to give it more meaning. This little jumper made me think a lot! It made me realize that I need a broader range of colors if I really want to get complicated. :)

I’m not sure the background for these pics is working for me. I’m still experimenting.

Having come across the work of self-taught artist Stephanie Granshaw was much like being enlighten. As a portrait artist, Stephanie focuses on the beauty of the feminine through the drawings and paintings she creates. I can’t decide which I like best, her portraits of iconic women or her paintings with gradients and strands of color. I feel very inspired every time I look at her work. She’s amazing!

Steph works with graphite, color pencils, water colors, oils and acrylics. She has art prints available for sale in various formats and she is also open to commissions.

This week I went back to the Cafe El Paso for another life drawing session. Having the urge to try something new this time, I thought about drawing white on black, but then I didn’t have time to pick up materials so I took the cheapy color pencils I bought at Argos last Christmas, thinking they might come in handy at some point. Considering they were meant to be used as stocking stuffers, I think the results came out pretty neat!

These drawings remind me of coloring black and white photographs with markers and I love the fact that they have a ghostly, vintage-like feel. I might make some postcards out of them at some point…who wouldn’t like a nuddy postcard!

Btw, Nathalie is an excellent model! She really goes beyond what most models do and since I’ve drawn her before, I’m a bit used to her form. It’s fun drawing her curly hair :)
