My newest Mars Sock Monkeys come with a bit of a Holiday flair and animal cuteness! There’s a sock monkey with a bear, bunny, piggy and a panda. I’ve done some of these cute animal designs on hoodies for my custom sock monkeys so I wanted to bring this nice detail to the sweatshirt hoodie. Included are some new colors: red and a Japanese piggy print fabric.

I used a technique called needle felting to add the small detail like the eyes and nose to the animal faces. I then embroidered their little mouths and attached the final pieces to the hoodies. I also tried something different by switching the heel part of the sock on some of the sock monkeys, which gave them different colored mouths.

This group of sock monkeys was fun to make. There were so many ideas that didn’t make it, but I’m sure I can incorporate them into next year’s sock monkeys! This Winter 09 batch of Mars Sock Monkeys are for sale on Etsy. As always, each of my Mars Sock Monkeys are one of a kind and handmade. Have a look. :)

Earlier this morning, I released the new batch of Mars Sock Monkeys I’ve been secretly working on for the past month. One noticeably big change about these new monkeys is that they wear sweatshirt fabric hoodies, which I spent a lot of time perfecting so that they kept their original appeal. To celebrate the Fall and Halloween seasons, I chose warm and earthy colors for them to give these new sock monkeys a nice festive look.

These 10 hooded companions are the beginning of a new era of sock monkeys for Maribel Made! Just like their original ancestors with knitted hoodies, these little guys are also handmade by me so you know they’re made with great care and quality products. :)

These and more Mars Sock Monkeys can be purchased online on Etsy. Remember, not one sock monkey is alike so if you see one you like grab it before it’s gone!

Henry was inspired from Eriko, the first sock monkey I sold! Eriko is a boy, but Henry is a girl. I like girls with boy names (it reminds me of Lady Oscar). The thing I love the most about Henry is her doggy print. I got these and another pair with monkey faces! For her hoodie I tried to mostly use lavender and yellow, but I did add a small pink heart to accent the pocket below.

I happened to go through a major breakthrough with this sock monkey. I sewed what should have been the legs as the head and vice-versa. I did this so that the doggy faces appeared right side up. Yay! :)

Good things coming up ahead. There’s a couple of baby monkeys coming soon. I’ve also reached over 50 sales on Etsy! Thanks everyone!! :D

Last week I launched a new Etsy shop dedicated to selling original drawings of pretty women in the nude. Each week I’ll be adding one of 20 or so drawings I made during life drawing sessions held around London last year.

This week I’ve listed Nathalie in April VIII. This illustration was made during my third week of life drawing. You can read about it here, Life drawing in London ~ week 3.

I finally opened shop at Art Fire, a new up-and-coming online marketplace for handmade goods quickly gaining a spot next to Etsy. I’m glad more companies are taking a shot at the space. I think there needs to be more options out there for sellers so they can decide what fits them best. Like one of my pet peev’s about Etsy are their fees for listing and for purchased items. I mean come on, I’m selling handmade here not commercially produced goods! Why take advantage of the seller who is responsible for creating the content in the first place? Apparently, Art Fire doesn’t have any fees, but then that’s what DaWanda said too and I recently got an invoice from them! That’s for another topic.

Well here it is, Maribel Made Art Firs Studio! I’m still very new at using Art Fire’s system. It has loads of stuff and tools. I personally think they have to much going on in the seller dashboard, but I’m sure with time they’ll focus on what’s working and what’s not. One thing I like is the studio stats. These show incoming links to your shop and for each of the items listed in your store. The stats page also explains how to link your shop to Google Analytics to get more comprehensive stat reporting.

One thing that turned me off at first was that prices entered in USD were automatically calculated to GBP based on the current exchange rate. For example, my Mars Sock Monkey which sells for $50 actually appears for sale today at £34.51 so I suppose it changes the price depending on what country you’re at. I wasn’t very excited about the .51, but I guess it doesn’t matter. I was actually listing dollars, pounds and euros on Etsy so this does make my job a lot easier. I noticed that prices entered into the Product Description box are also converted! Kinda cool.

I just launched a new Etsy shop! My Pretty Ones is a collection of illustrations I made during life drawing sessions held around London in 2008. The cool thing about the shop is that I’ll be selling original drawings, not prints, right off my notebook!

Below is the first illustration for sale this week; one more will be listed each week thereafter. There is about 20 illustrations in total, making them a unique collection. I am keeping a couple of them for myself though. The rest I’ll have in digital format for future archiving. :)

I’m sure you’ve heard lots about Twitter. It’s an exploding social network, but in a way it’s unlike most other social networks. My boyfriend got me to sign up during it’s early stages and it hadn’t been until now that I started using it again (Maribel Made on Twitter). At the time I used it on my phone, but it seemed sort of pointless then. Using it on the web is much more useful! Anyway, I had to find out what was the big deal was with it nowadays.

I’d have to say that after one week of using it, the way I consumed information on the web changed! I can’t quite put my finger on it, but search seems antiquated now. I think I’d rather learn something of interest from someone I stumble upon on Twitter and follow. And I have. Lots! In such a short amount of time too.

So I thought, why now share my Twitter finds with the world. For this I thank all the artistic people I’m following. With no further a due, I give you my initial Twit Finds weekly column!
